with Authorized Ashtanga Teacher Andrew Hillam
Sundays: 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM
January 31st - February 21st
Of the 8 limbs of Aṣṭāṅga Yoga, Prāṇāyāma is the bridge that transports us from the external limbs of Yama, Niyama and Āsana to the internal limbs of Pratyāhāra, Dhāraṇā, Dhyāna and Samādhi.
The Muṇḍaka Upanishad speaks of two golden birds sitting in the self same tree. One, the ‘Eating Bird’ is ravenously consuming the tree’s fruit, unable to satiate its never-ending desire, the other, the ‘Looking Bird’, serenely gazes on at the first. In our normal state we are the Eating Bird, the Ego, but as we cross the bridge we become aware of our real nature, that of the Looking Bird, the In-Dweller or Self, serene, content and without desire.
Over the course of 4 sessions we will begin to learn Prāṇāyāma, quieting the mind in preparation for the further limbs of Aṣṭāṅga Yoga. We will follow Prāṇāyāma with Vedic Chanting allowing the vibrations of these ancient Mantras to take us further into a state of quietude.
FEE: $55
Drop-In FEE: $25
Andrew Hillam started a daily Ashtanga yoga practice in 1994 in his home town of Adelaide, Australia, with Certified Ashtanga teacher, David Roche and his wife Simi. In 2004 Andrew moved to Encinitas in California with his family in order to study with Tim Miller. He has studied with Tim since 2004 and has completed the Advanced A as well as the first half of the Advanced B section of the Ashtanga Yoga series under Tim's guidance. From 2001 Andrew has made several trips to Mysore and has been granted a Teaching Authorization Certificate from the KPJAYI. Recently Andrew and his family stayed in Mysore for an extended 18 month sabbatical. Along with daily studies at KPJAYI he was able to deepen his studies of Sanskrit, Vedic Chanting, Eastern Philosophy and Meditation with highly respected local teachers. Andrew has found that the daily practice of Ashtanga with a focus on Breathing, Bhandas and Dristi builds a strong foundation from which the other limbs of Ashtanga Yoga can grow and develop. Continued practice then brings a greater awareness of the more subtle layers of consciousness elucidated by the ancient sages in such texts as the Yoga Sutras and Upanishads.
Backbending with Andrew Hillam
Saturday February 13th: 3-6 PM
The Bow of the Breath
Using the standing postures and the first half of the second series of Ashtanga Yoga as a foundation, we will explore how the bandhas and correct breathing prepare the body (and mind!) for deep back bending without pain. We will use a number of other asanas as well as some simple pranayama to illuminate key components of back bending.
FEE: $40

Andrew's experience is rooted in many years of dedicated daily practice, honoring the tradition handed down to us by Guruji. He believes in a relaxed and light hearted approach to teaching, at the same time encouraging students to go beyond what they thought possible in their practice, to unlock and release both physical and psychological blockages and to experience more deeply the benefits of this ancient science. Along with a daily practice of Asana, Pranayama, Meditation and Chanting, Andrew continues his study of texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Sutras, Upanishads and Jyotish. He continues to live in Encinitas with his wife Jessica and their two boys, Anjaneya and Narayana.

YOGA DEMONSTRATION BY DAVID!!!
AND BREATH, BANDHAS AND PRANAYAMA.
Exploring the Mantra of Ujjayi and the Mysteries of Energy Locks. In Sanskrit, Man means Mind and Tra means to Free or Deliver. Therefore the word Mantra means to Free the Mind. There are many mantras in yoga such as Om, Hare Krishna, Om Namo Shivaya and a plethora of others. In Ashtanga Yoga the mantra is the sound of our breath: Ujjayi. There is no other sound more universal than breath. It is not tied to language or culture and is “chanted” from the first moment of birth. This class will focus on the mantra of ujjayi within asana practice as well as during pranayama. In addition to breath work the class will also explore the invisible world of Bandhas. We well attempt to gain greater understanding of these subtle yet powerful tools through interactive discussion as well as a series of practical exercises.
SATURDAY

In this class David will take the students through the Primary Series in a step-by-step manner taking time to analyze the minute details of the practice. There is a lot of partner work in this fun-filled and energetic class as well as plenty of laughter. Though there is no guarantee that you will be able to jump through or enter all of the postures of the Primary Series after completing the class there is a guarantee that you will find a wealth of knowledge and information that you may apply within all realms of your practice. Alternatives will be given to allow students of all levels to attend.

INVERSIONS, BACKBENDS AND SITTING WITH YOUR BREATH
Finding Stability When the World is Inverted and Returning Home to Breath This class will turn your world upside/down in order to explore the dynamics of inverting the body through building a solid foundation from which to grow while also looking at the opposing forces at play in Inversions. Backbends will be redefined as front openings and sitting quietly will be explored as an active participation in self-exploration through developing a relationship with our lifelong companion, breath.
David Swenson began practicing yoga in 1969 at the age of 13. David's introduction to Ashtanga came in 1973 when he met David Williams and Nancy Gilgoff in Encinitas, California. In 1975 David and Nancy brought K. Pattabhi Jois to the U.S. for the first time and Swenson was fortunate enough to be there. He then initiated studies directly with the master. Swenson made his first trip to Mysore in 1977 and learned the full Ashtanga system as it was originally taught by K. Pattabhi Jois. David Swenson is recognized today as one of the worlds foremost practitioners and instructors of Ashtanga Yoga. For full details on David Swenson, please see www.ashtanga.net

Technique, Pranayama and more!
October 29-31
To gain a greater understanding of the practice we are doing and the science behind it both through practical principles and the philosophy can lead to a deepening in one’s own practice. We may do these asanas, vinyasas and even pranayamas for years without them truly penetrating the surface. To address this and give value to practice two key areas will be focused upon during this workshop
-Practice based upon integrity of posture respects natural functioning and encourages balance which is the path of yoga.
-Theorerical explanation that causes reflection and insight aiding in one’s own personal journey of yoga.
Practice sessions will cover key principles of asana practice, incorporation of bandha, ujjayi and drishti with vinyasa, ashtanga vinyasa in more detail, pranayama basics and discussion on philosophy and practice. Paul's workshop is insightful and inspiring but most of all it’s loaded with humor and lots of fun. For life is a journey refined by the techniques of yoga and to be laughed at along the way. Paul Dallaghan is one of three senior dedicated student of Sri O.P.Tiwari, one of the few remaining classical yogis and master of pranayama. He has practiced pranayama for many years under Tiwariji’s direct guidance which has led to deep insight and understanding of practice. Paul is also certified by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in ashtanga vinyasa, one of only a few in the world. He uses this as a base for intelligence in asana to be applied appropriately for the student. Paul continues with his regular routine of asana, pranayama and meditation on a daily basis and through love of the subject matter keeps up a keen study of the classical texts and scientific interpretations of what goes on in yoga.
Paul grew up in Dublin, Ireland, where humour and quick wits were a must for survival. After completing his degree at Trinity College he was bound for New York where his life in yoga began. Since 2001 he has been in Asia between Thailand and India with a primary focus on practice and study. With his wife, Jutima, they opened Yoga Thailand and continue to enjoy living there.
