This workshop will begin the discussion of how to deliver meaningful non-clinical care to students who are dealing with a musculoskeletal injury that is impairing their practice. The purpose is not to treat the injury but address it in a sensible manner that respects the anatomy, physiology and function of the body. Guidelines for what to consider in each case will be discussed. This is appropriate for teachers and students. A working knowledge of anatomy will be helpful.
Common injury areas to be covered include:
– lower back
– knee
– hamstrings
– wrist
– neck
– shoulder
– ribs

Bob Schroedter, PT, DPT, OCS is a local physiotherapist who enjoys treating all levels of movers, from professional ballet dancers to Ashtangis to armchair quarterbacks. His background in sports training, Pilates, and Gyrotonic complements his appreciation for the needs of the modern-day yogi, all packaged within a dry sense of humor. He holds several different board and third-party certifications, but really what he is good at is getting movers back to doing what they love.

Have you ever wondered why the postures of Ashtanga Yoga look and feel the way they do?

There is a direct connection between the form of each asana and the method of breathing used in Ashtanga Yoga. A proper understanding of the breathing, Mula and Uddyana Bandha allows for correction of each asana, is the key to preventing and healing injures, and breathes life into our practice. Bandha means lock or bind, and refers to holding the body’s strength and energy together. We will spend time investigating and experiencing how breathing transforms each of your asanas as well as it’s connection to bandha. We will also tie in Sankaracharya’s work Yoga Taravali, an important text in our Ashtanga Yoga lineage, often quoted by Guruji.

Jessica & Andrew’s special insights on how to better access and use the Bandhas in practice and in every day life sets us up for a fun, informative and interactive workshop.

Andrew is the Director of the Ashtanga Yoga program at Jois Yoga in Encinitas, CA and Certified by Sharath in 2013. He started a regular Ashtanga practice in 1994 & since 2001 has made many trips to Mysore, India, studying with Guruji, Sharath and Saraswati at KPJAYI. He continues to make regular trips to Mysore to study at KPJAYI with Sharath and pursues further studies in Veda chanting and the philosophy of Yoga and Vedanta.

Jessica started a daily Ashtanga Yoga practice with David and Simi Roche in 1994 while
studying as an Exchange Student at the University of Adelaide in Australia. She moved
to Encinitas in 2004 to study with Tim Miller. Over the last 14 years she has made
several trips to Mysore, India, to study with Guruji, Sharath and Saraswati and has been
granted a Teaching Authorization Certificate from the KPJAYI in Mysore. Jessica’s strengths lie in her ability to balance an intense daily yoga practice, motherhood and a professional career.

10am-12pm: Ashtanga Magic: Breath, Posture and Gaze

Delve into the secrets of the Ashtanga Yoga lineage, known as the Tristana method, and discover the magic of breath (pranayama), posture (asana) and focal point (dristhi). Break down the energetic alignment of key postures in the Ashtanga Yoga method and build the foundation for a meditative, awareness based practice. Starting off with the Sun Salutations and progressing through the Standing Postures, Kino guides you into a devotional practice that mergers the physical and subtle bodies and honors tradition while embodying the present. All levels.

2pm-4pm: Twist into Your Center

Deep twisting increases energy levels, cleanses the body and opens the mind to new levels of awareness. Find the perfect balance between activation and release in this new approach to twisting. Learn healthy technique to increase flexibility in your spine and shoulders while creating solid foundation in your pelvis. Use the core strength of the body to support the twisting and extension. You will have fun with many levels of twists and even use the twisting position to enter some challenging arm balances!

Saturday February 27, 2016

3:30pm-5:30pm: Be Strong

The yoga practice is a physical discipline with a spiritual intention. Strength in yoga is never just about getting the postures, but is instead an inner journey. By challenging your limits of what you know as possible you meet yourself at a deep level and discover hidden stores of strength. The purpose of this class is to bring you closer to the true spiritual realization of your own innate power center within. Careful emphasis on alignment, the development of the illusive bandhas, healthy breathing and firm grounding in the spiritual tradition of Ashtanga Yoga make this class a unique offering in the world. Delve into many arm balances, inversions and other key strength asanas from a technical and spiritual approach. Leave with a direct experience of what it means to truly be strong.

Sunday February 28, 2016

10am-12pm: Ashtanga Yoga Full Primary Series

Surrender to the traditional Ashtanga Yoga method with careful emphasis on the traditional vinyasa method and have fun along the journey. Experience the integrity and purity of the Ashtanga Yoga practice and be prepared to sweat.

2pm-4pm: The Path of Least Resistance:

Yoga is essentially the art of balance. In this workshop you will learn techniques that illustrate exactly how much effort you need to exert in order to see the results you want in your practice. Start off by cultivating the meditative mind and then apply that a series of asanas to change your perspective on them. Learn to do your practice with grace, effortlessness, lightness and ease. Whether you’re the proverbial over-achiever or the one who cannot find the extra-motivation to get your butt to class, this special seminar will challenge your notion of the work ethic equation. Master the dynamic between activation and release, work and effort and discover true grace.

FEE:

Single Session: $60

Full Weekend Workshop: $270

Reminder: This workshop is being held at Miami City Ballet in Miami Beach. This workshop will not be held at Miami Life Center.

Nadi Shodana – The Workings of The Intermediate Series

In this 1 week workshop Tim takes you through a detailed, technical, intense and fun exploration of how the Intermediate Series of Ashtanga Yoga works. The potential for unlocking the spine, hips and upper body, create strength and develop a deep sense of calmness-in-action is just some of the fruits this series has to offer. Taking root in healthy anatomical patterns we will identify energetic pathways that lead to pain-free deep backbends, safe hip opening and a step-by-step method to master the arm balances. Also known as the Second Series, this group of postures challenges both flexibility and strength while teaching mastery of the nervous system through breath, aim and detachment. This immaculate series of postures offers many life lessons leading directly to Patanjali’s teachings for the interested sadhaka. Students must have a regular practice, at minimum up to Eka Pada Sirsana in order to attend.
