Following a light asana practice, we will gather round and listen to the story the Indian national epic poem, The Mahabharata. As with all great literature, The Mahabharata works on many levels. On one hand, it is simply a very cool story, replete with magic, miracles, interfering gods, and a massive intra-familial civil war (Game of Thrones, Dune, and Lord of the Rings fans will not be disappointed). On the other hand, it is also a profound religious allegory on morality, duty, and the struggle each of us faces between our higher faculties and our base instincts. Furthermore, The Mahabharata is the source of the Bhagavad Gita, which is the central scripture of Hinduism and Yoga. Understanding the story leading up to, and therefore the context of, the Bhagavad Gita can only enhance our understanding and our yoga practice on and off the mat.
